Materials
Paper - An amazing sample of my career with flax, hemp, cotton, University of Iowa Center for the Book flax, Sea Pen and Twin Rocker pulp, paper made here.
Sewing - Pack sewn using Korean War era staple cotton suture thread on raised double cord - lye cooked and washed a bunch to remove most of of the abundant Non-cellulose (See Clarkson cord).
Boards - Pallet milled burn pile in Indiana in 2003, 2’ diameter short log (off-cut), straight grained cherry, quarter split into billets - resawn in ID on the true quarter, machine planed, air dried in stickered bundles for years in book board thickness. Worked by hand - saw, hand planed, chiseled, files, scrapers, hand drill. Pegged with straight grained Western Larch, chiseled, tapered to point, drive with wooden mallet to lock in cords.
Endband - Homegrown here by Melody (flax), processed and spun by the binder, thread plied by Jim (and especially by Melody), lye cooked thread on a wood cookstove, washed many times, sewn by binder using liberal amounts of beeswax.
Trim - Head and foredge, draw knife trimmed 2023 with no attempt to clean up tool marks (I could have scraped them smooth) tail left as is, often deckle edge (early notes to self will appear upside down).
Covering - Small piece of very nice traditional buckskin (brain tanned - smoked) using wheat starch paste.
