Materials

Paper - Frog Mill sampler, from paper made between 1992 - 1996.

Laboriously processed old fire house (flax) and Russian hemp primarily. It’s a long journey from raw fiber to relatively pure cellulose that will make light colored paper rather than dark grey paper. Even clean looking fibers will turn dark grey when made into paper. One must go the extra step of months of natural bleaching in the weather to achieve a light paper with flax or hemp. Flax is mostly old firehose. Most of the hemp is Russian, but also some Chinese, which was just breaking into the hemp market in the mid 90’s. The only other place I know that made paper with flax or hemp was the University of Iowa, and they don’t make it anymore.

Sewing - Saddle stitched textblock, first and last, to reinforce adhesive of paper to board with Melody’s homespun.

Boards - Quarter - split New Jersey Mulberry, standing dead. I call quarter-split “God’s Plywood”, and these contain the natural dowel that is the knot throughout the whole width of the wood - God’s plywood with natural dowel.
